Belém Tower in Lisbon, Portugal

Belém Tower is officially known as Torre de São Vicente or Tower of Saint Vincent. The tower sits on the Tagus River and was built in the 16th century as a tribute to the seafaring Portuguese. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and shows the Portuguese Manueline architectural style. It was meant to be part of Portugal’s naval defense system and it had a stint as a prison. Though a fort was meant to replaced this, the plan never came to fruition. Today, the tower serves as a museum.
