Bebek Bengil Crispy Duck Nusa Dua in Bali, Indonesia

An icon in Bali, Bebek Bengil Crispy Duck has many locations throughout Indonesia; we visited the Nusa Dua location. Bebek Bengil (Dirty Duck Diner) thankfully does not live up to its namesake. The seating is wide and open, and far from dirty. We sat cross legged on the floor at a low dining table. According to their website, the name comes from the ducks that trekked from the rice fields to the restaurant that was in the midst of construction. Their webbed feet tracked muddy footprints, and so these guests, aka the dirty ducks, gave inspiration to the restaurant name. Unlucky for the ducks, they ended up on the menu and the crispy duck became a popular dish. Fried to a crisp in coconut oil, the bony bird has little meat. We also ordered the Nasi Campur Bali, which features smoked chicken, boiled egg, fish sate, beef curry, balinese vegetables, rice crackers, and rice. The sambal on the bottom was the best once, made of shallots, onions, oil, and fresh herbs. For dessert, we had the Balinese cake platter to sample a bit of everything.

Tips
The duck is very heavy with coconut oil for those who dislike that taste. Their menu is extensive and you can try the popular Nasi Campur vegetarian style.
