The Weekender: August 2022 Edition

August is sweltering and by far not one of my favorite months. But, this year I had a 3 week break in between semesters so I’m not complaining. All in all, a month of family, food, and fun.

Long Weekend with Dimsum and Greenpoint Exploration

A long story about flight cancellations that I’d rather not relive meant we wouldn’t be visiting family. But since we had Friday off already, we decided to grab some dimsum. Look, I got a photo! Don’t mind the dish that’s 2/3 finished. We spent the day walking around Greenpoint and getting to know our surrounding neighborhoods more. We peeked over at Manhattan across the River, grabbed some coffee at Maman, and bought some goodies at Big Night, which advertises as a store for all your dinner party needs.

Beacon with Family

Beacon is no strange realm for us. We’ve been many times over these last few years as his cousins live up that way. I love walking down Main Street and getting into the shops. It’s attractive for day-trippers and has gotten even more crowded. Exciting to see the shops thriving and new comes spring up each time we visit.

Weekday Thai Food at Dek Sen, Connecticut and Sally’s Apizza

In a packed week, we went out for a Thursday night meal at Dek Sen, which we are so sad to announce is closing. I had to squeeze in one last meal of this pad thai with wonton wrappers, zabb wings, boat noodles (not featured because I had to dig in) and Thai donuts. This spot has been a favorite for my family and I in Elmhurst. While their sister location in Brooklyn is thriving, the menu is not exactly the same. Goodbye and thanks for the years of good eats. We went over to Connecticut again. So much for my friend’s worries about no one visiting her. Hubby and I snuck in some Sally’s Apizza. I definitely enjoy food, even if I don’t post about it nearly as much. I saw a documentary about New Haven style pizza and while this location is in Stamford, I definitely had to give it a go. Time permitting, I’d still love to try the original one day. The Apizza is not quite pizza from what I understand. The dough is tougher and chewier and much more burnt. Overall we enjoyed it very much.

Boston for a Weekend

My sis moved far away! Approximately 3.5-4 hours. We checked out Assembly Row and Harvard Square and I acquired a new notepad and some pens at the stationary store. It was a great time of good eats with family. Both my sisters went to Boston for college so I am familiar with it. Mental note, must bring camera to document some places for the website.

Dimsum and Dinner

I am guilty again of not taking photos. We had dimsum at our local spot which never disappoints and dinner at Camillo in Brooklyn. For dinner we had pinsa (Roman-style Pizza) which is very fluffy and light crust and meatballs with a brown gravy. This place is good for its traditional Roman food, which is a bit heavier from what I’ve seen. If it’s not obvious, I’m a huge fan of pizza.
