Museum Puri Lakisan in Bali, Indonesia

As the oldest museum in Bali, the idea was dreamt up in the late 1930s by Rudolf Bonnet, a Dutch painter, and Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati, the former prince of Ubud, and his brother Tjokrda Gde Raka Sukawati as an effort to protect Balinese art and artists. The museum opened its doors in 1956 to the public. There are wooden pieces by Ida Bagus Nyana which are described as fluid. Wayang or puppet theatre is popular entertainment which tells stories through leather puppets. Artist Ida Bagus Gelgel features this tradition in his paintings which tells stories of humans and animals. I Gusti Nyoman Lempad is a very important artist who had friendships with Bonnet and Spies, two foreign artists, the former who helped found the museum. A great peek into the Balinese culture and traditional art, it is a must see for first time visitors.
